The North Island Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) Demonstration Project

Sponsored by Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC, the NTFP Demonstration Project is an applied research project designed to address the complex issue of how best to manage non-timber forest resources in a way that is environmentally sustainable, economically viable and socially equitable. The project does this through a multi-tiered approach that incorporates resource inventory, research and management along with capacity building for First Nations and non-First Nations and business development assistance for local entrepreneurs. The project is based on Northern Vancouver Island on Canada's West Coast.

Fern Harvesting Trials - January 2003
Fern harvesting trials took place this past January on the North Island. The purpose of the trials was to determine the sustainability of harvesting ferns prior to timber harvest and to determine the economic viability, for North Island harvesters, of fern salvage prior to road construction.

Details about the fern harvesting trials will be available in our next newsletter in April.

As part of the harvesting trials, local people were trained in the identification, selection, sustainable harvesting methods, processing and marketing of both deer fern and sword fern. For further information about other NTFP training opportunities on the North Island, see Royal Roads Non-Timber Forest Products Certificate Program
